چکیده

The distribution of functional traits within and across spatiotemporal scales has been used to quantify and infer the relative resilience across ecosystems. We use explicit spatial modeling to evaluate withinand cross-scale redundancy in headwater streams, an ecosystem type with a hierarchical and dendritic network structure. We assessed the cross-scale distribution of functional feeding groups of benthic invertebrates in Swedish headwater streams during two seasons. We evaluated functional metrics, i.e., Shannon diversity, richness, and evenness, and the degree of redundancy within and across modeled spatial scales for individual feeding groups. We also estimated the correlates of environmental versus spatial factors of both functional composition and the taxonomic composition of functional groups for each spatial scale identified. Measures of functional diversity and within-scale redundancy of functions were similar during both seasons, but both withinand cross-scale redundancy were low. This apparent low redundancy was partly attributable to a few dominant taxa explaining the spatial models. However, rare taxa with stochastic spatial distributions might provide additional information and should therefore be considered explicitly for complementing future resilience assessments. Otherwise, resilience may be underestimated. Finally, both environmental and spatial factors correlated with the scale-specific functional and taxonomic composition. This finding suggests that resilience in stream networks emerges as a function of not only local conditions but also regional factors such as habitat connectivity and invertebrate dispersal.

Species Community Structure and Functional Redundancy in Swedish Headwater Streams Local versus Regional Control

Streams and rivers only contain a small proportion of the Earth’s freshwater, but nevertheless harbour much biodiversity. Headwater streams are the most prevalent running water environments, but despite their wide distribution, they are often excluded from important freshwater legislation and national monitoring programmes. This thesis investigated biodiversity patterns of benthic macroinverteb...

Spatio-Temporal Variability in Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities in Headwater Streams in South Korea

Comprehensive research on the structural and functional variability of benthic macroinvertebrate communities within headwater streams is limited, despite the fact that the majority of streams within a watershed are headwater streams that form the primary link between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, we investigated the structure and function of benthic macroinvertebrate communitie...

Spatial Analysis of Regional Resilience in Geographic Information Systems with a Planning Approach Eastern Region of Urmia Lake

The resiliency approach has the potential to pay attention to the sustainability paradigm in the area of planning in different dimensions and sectors as a new shadow approach to local policies with a global approach to regional development. However, the concept of resilience has emerged over the past years as an emerging approach to environmental planning and management literature. In this...

Fine scale gene flow and individual movements among subpopulations of Centrolene prosoblepon (Anura: Centrolenidae).

Dispersal capabilities determine and maintain local gene flow, and this has implications for population persistence and/or recolonization following environmental perturbations (natural or anthropogenic), disease outbreaks, or other demographic collapses. To predict recolonization and understand dispersal capacity in a stream-breeding frog, we examined individual movement patterns and gene flow ...
